Press-Star-studded field to play in Harry Carson Celebrity Golf Classic
Debbie
Morning News -
Admission is free for all school-age children and $5 for everyone else. Spectator gates open at 8:30 a.m.
The tournament, which is scheduled to feature more than 20 stars from the professional sports realm, raises money for The School Foundation, a private endowment that provides financial support for students in Florence School District 1.
Carson, who attended both Wilson and the former McClenaghan High School in Florence, said in a press release he feels compelled to help the schools and community that gave him his start.
“We have come from this system and we are obligated to fulfill the needs of the children of Florence School District One,” Carson said. “I am very proud of the efforts of the community to coordinate this tournament and execute one of the finest golf classics anywhere.”
Carson was inducted into the hall of fame in Canton, Ohio, last summer. He was a team captain 10 of his 13 seasons with the Giants, was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and once made 25 tackles in a Monday night game against Green Bay.
Carson is scheduled to be joined by the likes of football greats Lawrence Taylor, L.C. Greenwood, David “Deacon” Jones and others.
Other sports will be represented as well, including boxer James “Bonecrusher” Smith, College of Charleston basketball coach Bobby Cremins and Dave Henderson, a former major league baseball player who spent most of his career with Seattle and Oakland.
“We believe this is the largest collection of sports stars ever assembled in the Pee Dee outside of Darlington Raceway,” said Debbie Hyler, The School Foundation’s executive director. “We are delighted they are here to support Harry Carson, our students and our community.”
