The School Foundation Honors Basketball Star Jolette Law at 2008 School Foundation Celebration
Former Harlem Globetrotter Jolette Law will be honored as Florence District One’s Distinguished Graduate at the Seventh Annual School Foundation Celebration, foundation officials announced today. Law was a three-time Kodak All-American at Wilson High School before furthering her basketball career at the University of Iowa. Following her collegiate career, she joined the Harlem Globetrotters as the first, and at the time, only female team member. She completed three worldwide tours, and conducted several seminars and clinics in her role as an ambassador of goodwill with the team. Long regarded as one of the top assistant coaches in the country, Law was named the seventh head women’s basketball coach at the University of Illinois. Her previous stint included 12 years at Rutgers, the last four as associate head coach.
“I am very honored to have been selected as this year’s distinguished graduate” Jolette said. “My success would not be possible without God, and the support of the teachers, coaches, and administrators in Florence School District One. I am grateful for the guidance and leadership I received while I was a student there.”
“Ms. Law embodies the qualities of great District One graduates,” Foundation Executive Director Debbie Hyler stated. “She certainly has proven a tremendous drive to succeed.”
In addition, the foundation announced that the keynote speaker will be William E. Milliken, Founder and Vice Chairman of Communities in Schools. Milliken is one of the most successful and respected youth advocates in the U.S. As winner of the American Association of School Administrators’ “Champion for Children” award, he was lauded by the association as “a guiding force – who has opened the doors to success and growth to countless youngsters.”
“I am proud to salute The School Foundation for the tremendous work they do on behalf of America’s children” Milliken stated. “Through their efforts, many more children will have a better chance at a brighter future.”
